Project description
In spring 2024, components of the existing sound system at the Catholic parish church of St. Martin in Mehring (Altoetting district / Southern Germany) were replaced with new audio systems from PHOENIX Professional Audio.
Together with our long-standing partner masitcon, a full-service systems provider in Emmerting, Bavaria, our Phoenix Professional Audio team used the existing speakers to replace the church’s amplifier with a new digital DSP POWERVOICE automatic mixing amplifier, install new gooseneck microphones at the altar, ambo, and priest’s seat, and recalibrate the room acoustics.
By continuing to use the existing speakers, the acoustics in the church were significantly improved with little effort – compared to purchasing a completely new sound system.
By leveling and making various room acoustic adjustments using the new amplifier, the number of existing 10 speakers in the nave was reduced to just 4 – a great visual benefit for the beautiful interior of the Gothic hall church. These four speakers are split into two lines and driven by the internal second power amplifier of the POWERVOICE automatic mixer amplifier with delay. A speaker in the gallery was connected to the zone output of the 400-watt line.
The PV-DSP-4ACD.9.4.2X digital automatic mixer amplifier with two Class-D power amplifiers and 400W + 200W / 100V power from Phoenix is specially designed for sound transmission in acoustically challenging spaces such as churches.
The amplifier is equipped with state-of-the-art technologies, such as an integrated de-esser for dynamic attenuation of “ess” and sibilance, and a compressor-expander function for dynamic processing of audio signals and recordings. The new amplifier ensures more precise room equalization in St. Martin’s Church and adapts perfectly to the room acoustics.
The existing microphones were also replaced due to age, as they had already experienced intermittent failures. High-quality gooseneck microphones from Phoenix’s MEX and MEG series were used on the altar, ambo, and priest’s seat.
The existing microphone jack on the gallery (organ) was replaced with an MP-MX-3 mono preamplifier with a small flush-mounted housing and power supply. This eliminates the hassle of switching between the organist’s microphone and the existing wireless microphone (from a third-party manufacturer). These can now be used and controlled simultaneously. Additionally, there is the option of inputting external audio signals or playing music via the built-in BT USB player.
Less effort – greater impact: By replacing only a few components of the existing sound system (such as the amplifier and microphones here) and professionally re-leveling the system, our team, together with our partner masitcon, managed to achieve an astonishing acoustic improvement in St. Martin’s Church – with even sound coverage throughout the entire sound area and a significant reduction in reverberation.
