After several years of extensive internal renovation and rearrangement of the liturgical places, the Parish Church Mariae Himmelfahrt in Schoenau/Upper Bavaria got a new sound system in spring 2017. After approval by the responsible engineering and architect’s office, Phoenix Professional Audio GmbH, which has the necessary experience by many already successfully implemented sound projects in churches and was prepared for the challenging task, got the order for the conception and implementation of the church sound by the ordinariate. The planning and installation has been carried out based on the premise to integrate the modern sound technology unobtrusively into the church’s architecture — both optically and also with the operating concept.
The detail-loving baroque appearance of the church building, which has been sanctified in the year 1723 and has completely been restored indoor in the year 2017, consists of a light, high central nave and two galleries with a rather low reverberation time — and thereby from an acoustical point of view good conditions for the sound reinforcement of the church.
Due to acoustically favorable conditions, Phoenix Professional Audio chose a decentralized sound concept with analog speaker technology, which thanks to state-of-the-art technologies has especially been developed for the use in churches, cathedrals and domes and is thereby perfectly suitable for a perfect speech intelligibility and music reproduction in the church in Schönau.
As part of a festival service which was celebrated by the archbishop of Munich and Freising, Cardinal Reinhard Marx, on Sunday, 2 April 2017, the new altar in the restored Parish Church Mariae Himmelfahrt has been sanctified and thereby the church has solemnly been reopened. Filled to its capacity, the believers even stood on the stairs to the galleries of the church interior, to be present at this celebration with Cardinal Marx, Priest Amit Sinha Roy, Deacon Josef Holger and Father Alexander.
In the course of the consecration, the new altar has been sprinkled with holy water and anointed with Chrisam. After that, incense has been burned on the altar and solemnly altar candles have been lit. Only after the subsequent consecration prayer of the Bishop, the Eucharist may be celebrated on the new altar.
As microphone for the new altar the gooseneck microphone MEG-1-450 of Phoenix in high-quality silver-matt powder coating with the suitable base PO-MEG has been used. Colors and shape of the microphone harmoniously melt with the ecclesiastical interior architecture. For monitoring in the sanctuary K4-20REG sound columns are used.
During the ceremony, the wonderful sounds of trumpets, clarinets and trombones of Schönau’s musicians and the solemn singing of the church choir Schönau filled the splendid brilliant nave. Due to the homogeneous coverage of the directional sound columns K4-80N with with 3.5″ neodymium chassis and the support sound columns K4-40F which have been used by Phoenix PA in the nave the reproduction of the sonorous beauty of this background music has also electro-acoustically been implemented brilliantly. According to their position, the speakers have been equipped with appropriate delays and individual filters have been adjusted.
The first and second gallery are each filled with sound with passive directional sound columns K4-40F. Besides this, for the choir at the organ loft Phoenix PA used a microphone tripod with the hand microphone ME-4, which is characterized by an extremely linear frequency response and very high reverse loss.
An optically suitable and also acoustically optimal solution for the ambo has been found with the newly developed microphone tripod system MEGZ-5GS with ground sleeve. The shapely designed microphone tripod system has the appearance of a filigree, long gooseneck protruding from the ground and thanks to its timeless minimalist design it fits unobtrusively and optimally into the overall image of the church.
As Priest’s microphone, in the area of the Priest’s chair the elegant microphone tripod system MEGZ-5 has been installed. The slim movable design microphone tripod system consists of a 12 mm thin and 120 cm long stand pipe, which ends at the upper end into an only 6 mm thin gooseneck, which carries an electret condenser microphone. Stand pipe and microphone are powder-coated in a silver-matt color and thanks to their filigree design already at a short distance merge almost completely with the environment, so that they hardly appear visible.
Furthermore, as mobile equipment UHF wireless senders for the altar signal transmission and suitable wireless microphones by Sennheiser are used.
The heart of the PA system is located in the sacristy: the audio hub – a mobile, especially assembled and developed for the Parish Church 19″ cabinet model RMA-18-A66 of Phoenix, from which all settings and the operation of the system can be carried out.
Besides the digital automatic pre-amplifier AMX-9DSP4-ACD, wireless receivers of Sennheiser, a CD/SD USB player and a Symmetrix management system also the 4-channel Phoenix power amp PA-4240FX has been installed in the cabinet. For a better speech intelligibility for hearing aid wearers, also an induction loop system has been laid in the church, which consists of the Phoenix loop amplifier ILA-1000 and receiver ILA-E and has also been integrated into the 19″ cabinet.
The digital pre-amplifier AMX-9DSP4-ACD, which takes over the central role of the new system and controls the signal distribution, is equipped, among other things, with 8 analog universal mic./line inputs and a line input and 4 DSP outputs with audio matrix. For each input, 10 parametric EQs and for each DSP output 5 parametric EQs are available together with a compressor / expander / limiter per input, de-esser, gain and delay settings (in the outputs). The setting of the individual parameters is done via a special software. Once configured, the presets can be selected and operated directly at the device or easily via the media control.
Also a WiFi connection is located in the 19″ cabinet, so that alternatively for operation in the sacristy the related iPad can be used as portable device and the PA system can also easily be controlled from the church – flexible and fully barrier-free.
The entire Phoenix Professional Audio team thanks the building committee of the Parish Church Mariae Himmelfahrt very much for their trust in us and all parties for the great harmonic and effective cooperation during the whole project!
